Netball stalwart calls time
World championship glory, Commonwealth Games medals and national titles - Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel defender Sheryl Scanlan has experienced the greatest highs netball has to offer.
Now, as she announces her retirement following the Steel’s final game of the 2012 ANZ Championship against the Melbourne Vixens on Saturday, Scanlan is focused on the next chapter in her life, including a shift to Brisbane with husband Malcolm and their six-year-old son Jafeth.
“I’m excited and sad at the same time. I’m sad to leave Invercargill but really excited to see what the future holds,” she said.
The former Silver Ferns defender ventured south from Auckland with her young family in 2009 to take up a contract with the Steel franchise and, while injuries have marred the later stages of her illustrious sporting career, she has enjoyed her time representing the region.

It all started November 14, 2011 at Southland Girls High School. A rowdy bunch of girls, two nervous coaches and a few unsuspecting, token men chucked into the mix came together to pave a new pathway for the Otago and Southland combined netball franchise, the Southern Steel. Now here, we are eight months later, hundreds of hours of training, matches, video analysis, discussions, debriefs, team talks, laughs, tears and moments have passed by and we face our final round for 2012, at home in Invercargill against the Melbourne Vixens.
