2026 ANZ Premiership - Elimination Final Preview

The road to the 2026 ANZ Premiership title continues this weekend, with the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel hosting the VIP Frames & Trusses Tactix in the Elimination Final in Invercargill.

With a place in the Grand Final on the line, history suggests fans can expect a close contest. There have been eight previous ANZ Premiership Elimination Finals and every one has been decided by seven goals or fewer, with an average winning margin of just 4.3 goals.

The Steel earned hosting rights with a Round 10 victory over the Tactix and return to the ANZ Premiership finals for the first time since 2021, while the Tactix are aiming to keep their title defence alive.

Steeling for epic Elimination Final

Finals netball just hits different.

It’s a unique vibe Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel head coach Wendy Frew remembers fondly having led the franchise to both of its previous ANZ Premiership titles.

Her role has now switched from captain to coach but the leadership she injects remains just as crucial as the Steel prepares to take on the VIP Frames and Trusses Tactix in Sunday’s must-win Elimination Final.

“The girls have asked me a few questions about it recently which is really cool because, to be honest, I’m pretty humble about it so don’t bring it up too much. When I’ve been asked, it’s been great to tell them about the journey and share those key moments from the game and about our culture which, for me, was the reason we got it over the line,” Frew said.

Silver Ferns : Georgia Heffernan, Kate Heffernan, Kimiora Poi, Carys Stythe and Aliyah Dunn

Southern players named in Silver Ferns squad

The inclusion of five southern players in the Silver Ferns squad named this week brings tremendous pride.

Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel captain Kimiora Poi will be joined by shooter Georgia Heffernan and defender Carys Stythe at next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, along with former captain Kate Heffernan, who has plied her netball trade at the Adelaide Thunderbirds this season. Steel shooter Aliyah Dunn has been named as a non-travelling reserve.

Head coach Wendy Frew praised their accomplishment.
“Each of them has earned this opportunity through their hard work, commitment and incredible performances both for the Steel and throughout their netball careers,” she said.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for them personally and a proud moment for our region. They are outstanding athletes, but they are also wonderful people who contribute so much to our sport.

“To earn that fern is a massive honour. I know they will embrace this opportunity and represent both the Silver Ferns and the south incredibly well and we will all be following their journey closely and cheering them on at the Games.”
