What do you get if you mix 15 current or former Silver Ferns with a solid dose of rivalry?
A clash of colossal proportions.

The only New Zealand team to beat the highly-rated Magic last year – a thrilling 47-43 win at Stadium Southland – the Steel will be determined to repeat the feat when the two meet for the second time in 2009.
The potential individual match-ups alone are enough to have netball fans squealing in anticipation. With both teams bursting with talent and the infamous Southern crowd factored into the equation – hang on to your seats!
Daneka Wipiiti and Donna Wilkins will have to be at their sublime best to combat the aggressive Magic defence, spearheaded by the influential Casey Williams – named 2008’s Most Valuable Player.
The formidable pairing of Megan Hutton and Katrina Grant have worked their own magic on international superstar Irene van Dyk in the past and hopefully have some new tricks to rattle the world’s most accurate shooter.
On paper the Magic’s weakness appears to be in the midcourt where the services of Amigene Metcalfe will be sorely missed, but Laura Langman is certainly capable of leading by example and has skilled support in Samoan international Frances Solia.
There’s no denying Magic is brimming with individual stars, but merging that plethora of skills into a cohesive team falls to coach Nolene Taurua.

Erika discovers success in Southland by Kate Buchanan

Notching up just one victory in four years would be tough for any athlete – but it’s agonising when you have a competitive streak like Erika Burgess.
That’s why the talented defender took control of her own destiny and headed to Southland – soon after Erika was savoring the sweet success, securing the 2007 National Bank Cup as a member of the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Sting.
“That is the highlight of my career at the moment – there’s probably more to come – but that was pretty surreal,” she said.
Before her Southern debut Erika played for the North Island’s ill-fated Western Flyers.
“When you lose for ages you forget how to win … down here I’ve learned how to win,” she said.
“It’s just so depressing losing – you can put out a good performance individually on the court but if you don’t win, which is the ultimate goal, you don’t feel satisfied at all.”
Erika is now enjoying her third year immersed in the ranks of Southland’s netball elite, the life of a professional netballer complementing her competitive nature.

Steel steals win over Tactix by Kate Buchanan

Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel 48 - Mercury Energy Tactix 47

The Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel snatched a 48-47 win from the clutches of the Mercury Energy Tactix in Christchurch on Saturday.

With just seconds on the clock, Steel shooter Daneka Wipiiti’s accuracy inflicted heartbreak yet again for the Tactix who, despite a gutsy effort worthy of victory, stumbled once again when it mattered.

For Steel defender Sheryl Scanlan, the final whistle spelled the end of a torrid battle between the Southern rivals.

“There was a mixture of relief and exhaustion,” Scanlan said. “We were really happy to come out with a win. I’m not one to usually look at the scoreboard but I was aware we were 7-down at one stage so it was great that the team managed to pick ourselves up from that.”
