Mystics clinch finals spot
Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel 35, LG Northern Mystics 47
Clinching a spot in the ANZ Championship finals with a comprehensive 47-35 win over the Southern Steel, the LG Northern Mystics finally shook off the 'underachievers’ tag which has plagued them for the past four years.
Mystics coach Debbie Fuller said the win was “a huge relief”.
“We’re in the semi-finals and that’s somewhere the Mystics haven’t been before … we’re one step closer to our goal.”
While not reflected on the scoreboard, the Steel proved a tough final hurdle to overcome.
“They made it very hard, as we always expected them to. Our concentration for the full 60 minutes was a concern – being able to focus and being able to put the foot down, because essentially we know we can do it but we have these lapses where we kind of go into cruise mode. We want to get rid of cruise mode and stick with fifth gear the whole game,” Fuller said.

Steel a secret from … Natasha Chokljat
Injecting her trademark speed into the midcourt, former Australian international Natasha Chokljat has been an explosive addition to the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel this season.
Chokljat, who won the 2009 ANZ Championship premiership in 2009 with the Melbourne Vixens, was forced to endure a frustrating wait until round five before staging her Steel debut after being side-lined with injury during preseason preparations.
She’s featured in every game since then and added a new dynamic with some deft touches on attack and a tenacious defensive attitude.
Unfortunately, the Steel’s results on the court did not always reflect its determination and work ethic off it.
