MATCH REPORT : Mystics outmuscle Steel

The Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel were outmuscled 52-49 by the LG Mystics at Stadium Southland this week.
The importance of the match to each team's 2010 finals aspirations was acutely demonstrated by the physicality of the clash. The Mystics were unrelenting in their physical approach, reflected in the statistics which showed a staggering 63 contact penalties to the Steel's 26.
The sheer volume astounded Steel coach Robyn Broughton.
“63 penalties against them to 26 against us – we're too soft.” she said.
“It was tough, it was really physically tough and that's what we've just got to recognise – that's the way the game is these days.

PLAYER PROFILE : Erika Burgess
Tenacious Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel defender Erika Burgess thrives on ticking off goals.
Learning is a passion for the 26-year-old and the netball court is a metaphoric classroom where she continues to expand her netball knowledge.
“My goals change every week – once I've ticked something off I've been trying to improve on, then I change to something else. I write a couple of words on my wrist that I try to focus on,” she said.
The technique has earned rewards this season with Burgess a regular starter at wing defence. But she shies away from claims she's cemented the bib.
“Making the starting line-up was a goal – but I'm still feeling challenged as well. It's a good balance because you can get a bit complacent,” she said.

Putting in the Hard Yards !
Round 9 is Steel's bye weekend but the hard work doesn't stop! The Steel take on an invitational team on Monday 17 May at the new Gore Multisports Complex. Doors open at 5.30pm with game starting at 6.30pm. Entry is FREE but seats are strictly limited to 300 on a "first come, first served' basis.
