Vixens Superior in Anzac Day Clash - Saturday 25th April 2009 by Kate Buchanan
Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel 31 – Melbourne Vixens 48
It had all the hallmarks of a fitting Anzac tribute – formidable teams from each side of the Tasman engaging in battle to ultimately bring pride to their respective countries. Unfortunately for the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel, the result made history for the wrong reasons. Saturday’s 31-48 loss to the Melbourne Vixens was the team’s biggest defeat since the ANZ Championship started – and no one would have felt the frustration more than the players themselves. For captain Adine Wilson the team’s first game on foreign soil this season turned out to be “a good old-fashioned hiding”. “We really back ourselves and we were really disappointed with that score,” she said. “We’ve got to learn from each game and we’ll know that next time we cross the Tasman we have to be exceptionally tough.” The infamous Aussie-style proved hard to combat.

Sheryl's a Southern belle now by Kate Buchanan
Oysters weren’t the only lure south for Sheryl Scanlan – but the delectable mollusk is definitely a mouth-watering bonus. “I love oysters. When the season started, I definitely made up for lost time,” Sheryl confessed. The Bluff delicacy is famous in its own right, but it was Southland’s netball icons that proved the real draw card for Sheryl – coach Robyn Broughton, international calibre players, and the best netball environment in the country. A loyal Auckland netballer for over two decades, the talented Silver Fern defender took a risk moving her young family to Invercargill – and found exactly what she was searching for. “It’s the best decision we could have made as a family,” Sheryl said. “I wouldn’t want to be any other place to be honest – we made the right choice.” READ SHERYL SCANLAN'S FULL PROFILE
