A Word from Wenz
The lead up to this weekend’s game has been a humbling one for me. Yes, Sunday’s game against the Tactix in Christchurch will be my 100th for the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel and the pride I feel representing the Southern community is as strong as it was on April 7, 2008 - our inaugural game. It’s fair to say I’ve been in the game a while now and milestones such as this tend to sneak up on you to be honest. My focus has been firmly on the game itself and the result we need to achieve against our South Island rivals. Only when that final whistle blows will I take a moment to reflect on the past nine seasons with the franchise and enjoy the occasion with family and friends. It’s a double celebration for the Steel with our tenacious defender Jane Watson also set to rack up her 50th ANZ Championship appearance. Congrats Jane - you’ll be clocking up the hundy before you know it. All emotion aside, as a team we know how massive this game is in terms of our season. While we have booked a spot in the NZ Conference Finals, there’s nowhere else we want to play than at our house - ILT Stadium Southland. A win on Sunday will cement that final on home turf - talk about motivating! Our previous outing against the Tactix resulted in a 58-all draw - the only blip on our record so far this season - and we are determined to rectify that. Make sure you tune in on Sky Sport and watch the action unfold.
Cheers, Wendy Frew
