Donna delights in Steel win by Kate Buchanan
Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel 61 - Northern Mystics 52
An on-form Donna Wilkins shot the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel into a top-four position after its first ever win against the Northern Mystics.
With trademark determination etched on her face, the former dual international’s timely return to form propelled the Steel to a 61-52 win in Auckland on Monday night.
The crucial victory exorcised plenty of demons for the Steel who were seeking redemption after suffering its biggest ever loss in the ANZ Championship just two weeks ago. For Wilkins, the inspirational performance silenced a few critics, her 95 percent accuracy and unrivalled work rate through the court impossible to fault.
“It was about time, wasn’t it,” Wilkins told Sky Sport of the display which earned Player of the Match. “We really had to come out firing after our game against the Vixens – we got a bit of a thumping. We regrouped after having a bye last weekend and we really needed to get this one on the road so we’re very happy with that performance.”

Countdown to Megan's final whistle by Kate Buchanan
They say patience is a virtue – one Megan Hutton is desperately seeking.
Injury has forced the talented Southern Steel defender into unfamiliar territory this season – the bench – and the front row seat is proving frustrating.
“It’s been blimmin’ hard – it’s probably the hardest thing that I’ve had to do,” Megan said.
“I’m not patient at all – it’s probably one of my worst traits actually.”
With retirement looming just weeks away, so far the 2009 ANZ Championship hasn’t materialized into the swansong Megan visualised.
“Everyone gets their time on the bench and unfortunately this is my time – not that the timing is perfect at all because you’re a long time retired and I didn’t want to be playing out my career this way,” she said.
“The negative is clearly not being out there but my time will come and I’m sure I’ll be out there before the season is through.
