A Word from Wenz
Never underestimate the power of a home crowd. We certainly don’t and I’m pretty sure our opposition don’t either!
We are back on home turf for the next two rounds and couldn’t be more excited. There is no greater pride than playing in front of your friends, family and community. We love our Steel fortresses in Dunedin and Invercargill … about as much as our rivals don’t!
Our crowds are vocal, knowledgeable and passionate and we can’t wait to have you all on Team Steel again in 2018!
First up we face off against the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin tomorrow night before a re-match against the Northern Mystics at ILT Stadium Southland on Monday.
It’s fair to say the opening round of the ANZ Premiership had both highs and lows for us as a team.
We stormed out of the blocks to notch up a solid victory over the Mystics in our opening game. Fantastic to see our young defender Courtney earn her first ANZ Premiership cap, while Dani and Olivia also featured amongst the action in their first season as a contracted Steel player.
Obviously, game two against the Pulse less than 30 hours later didn’t go to plan and we bid farewell to our 22-game unbeaten streak. It was a very disappointing performance with a lot of personal errors. We have high expectations of ourselves as athletes and collectively as a team so there’s been plenty of analysis and taking ownership of our mistakes at training over the past week.
A loss always sparks a fire in the guts so expect a different performance tomorrow night. Make sure you’ve got your tickets as we’d love to see you there!
Off the court, Gina, Te Paea, Shannon, Abby, Hu and Olivia had a blast at the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/Walk events in Dunedin and Invercargill on Sunday while Malysha will be hanging out with the cool kids at various kindergartens in Invercargill this week as part of the Road Safety Southland Bright Sparks programme.
Gina, Shannon, Te Paea, Dani, Olivia and Jen are also joining in the fun at Dunedin Netball Centre’s Future Ferns Festival Days this week. So make sure you come and say hi when you see us out and about in the community.
Cheers,
Wenz
