A Word from Wenz
You’d think an 18-goal win in the opening game would have us grinning from ear to ear … but round one of the ANZ Premiership delivered mixed reactions. Don’t get me wrong, beating the Northern Stars 75-57 was the result we were seeking and it was mint to finally get the season underway and shake off the round one jitters! It was fantastic to see our tenacious young defender Abby Erwood earning her first start for Steel, while Jamie Hume staged her league debut at goal attack during the last quarter and also delivered a solid outing. We’re all proud to see our homegrown talent coming through the ranks and keeping us “senior” players on our toes. On reflection, it’s fair to say some aspects of the performance were disappointing and didn’t meet our own expectations as a team. So, there’s plenty to work on, starting this Monday night when we take on the Mystics in Auckland. It’s exciting to see new concepts being revealed for the ANZ Premiership. The first to be launched was Super Sunday … and it proved to be exactly that! All six teams playing in the same location was wicked and just as much fun for the players as it was for the fans! We can’t wait to host our own Steel Super Sunday on April 30 at ILT Stadium Southland and, if ticket sales so far are any indication, our netball community is fired up about it as well. We’re also eagerly counting down to our first outing on home turf - against the Magic next Monday, April 10. It’s incredibly humbling to run into our Steel fortress with our passionate crowd united right there with us. It’s such a special feeling and even as I prepare to do it for the 15th season, I’m as proud as I was in 2002. As players, we thrive on the atmosphere around us so make sure you’ve got tickets to add your energy to ours at all our home games.
Cheers, Wenz
