Sun-kissed blond hair, Aussie twang and a golden tan that’s rarely seen in the cooler Southland climes – it would be easy to slap a “surfie chick” label on Leah Shoard.
The Southern Steel shooter is certainly at home on sandy shores, but confesses her ability to ride the waves is limited, despite surfing lessons during a Queensland holiday.
“I have an official certificate that says I’m a surfer and it’s stuck on my wall at home and I claim it – but give me a board and I’m hopeless,” Leah admits.
“I try to surf but I’m not too successful – I actually have a big scar on my knee from one attempt where the board sliced me with its fin.”
Even an artic Southland autumn isn’t enough to deter Leah from taking a dip at Oreti Beach recently.
“I did go in the water after a beach session … it was like an ice bath so it was good recovery,” she said.
It’s that zest for new experiences which prompted Leah to farewell her Wollongong home in New South Wales and shift to Invercargill this year.
“To be realistic about it, who at the age of 22 gets the chance to live in another country for six months and be paid for it and play with another team and learn a different culture – it’s just a life experience that you can’t take for granted,” she said.
