Magic tricks defeat Steel - Monday 25th May 2009
Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel 39 Colourplus Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic 48
by Kate Buchanan
The Colourplus Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic reinforced its status as the team to beat with a comprehensive 48-39 victory over the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel at Stadium Southland on Monday night. The Steel may have failed in its bid to upset New Zealand’s strongest team but hasn’t wavered in its determination to seal a top four spot. “We’ve still got six games – it doesn’t mean our season’s over to make that top four by any means,” Steel captain Adine Wilson said. “Definitely our goal as a team is to make that top four – I think we’d be bitterly disappointed if we didn’t. We’ve still got the opportunity to do that – yes, it’s going to take some hard work and yes, it’s going to take some wins against Australian teams but if you don’t get those wins you’re not worth being in the top four anyway.” Back on home turf for the first time since the season opener in April, the Steel players were enveloped by parochial support as they stepped into the sold-out Stadium Southland.
“It was just fabulous to be home,” Wilson said. “You could feel the girls surge because the crowd surged.”

Stitching up the opposition by Kate Buchanan
Brushing threats to her reputation aside, staunch Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel defender Katrina Grant admits to finding a new passion in the south – sewing. While a contrast to her other skills, for Katrina heading to rural Lochiel to master a needle and thread has proven a valuable lesson in perseverance – a key ingredient to formidable defence. “Surfing, skateboarding and sewing – it just makes sense doesn’t it?” she quipped. While Katrina’s blessed with natural talent in the netball stakes, it’s fair to assume she proved a challenge for sewing tutor Alvena McKenzie. “Sewing is hard because I’m not used to not knowing how to do something straight away,” Katrina admits. “I’m not a perfectionist but I like to try my best and get things right. Alvena’s awesome – she makes us yummy lunches and is so generous and nice. It’s relaxing and the time goes too quickly.” Being immersed in the demands of professional sport and studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce means hobbies take on a new significance, providing light relief. Raised at Beachlands, an hour’s drive from the bustle of central Auckland, Katrina is used to sand underfoot. “I surf – not very well but I do have fun. I brought my board down here but was too cold.”
