A Word from Wenz
The last time we toppled the Queensland Firebirds was in Dunedin in 2008 - the inaugural ANZ Championship season. Now, we’ve finally managed to rack up another victory in 2016 - the final ANZ Championship season. A tad ironic really. While I’m excited about the Elite Domestic League which will be launched in New Zealand next year, I’m still going to miss matching up to the Aussie teams. You know it’s going to be a torrid battle every time and, like any athlete, I just love a challenge. It’s what keeps the fire in your gut burning strong. To notch up a 15-goal victory over the defending champions was satisfying as a team but it’s not all about the scoreboard. To be honest, I don’t think it was a fair reflection of our performance which was lacking in a few areas. We go out every week striving to be better than our last game and we simply didn’t achieve the statistics we were aiming for. That probably sounds harsh given the score line was one of our most comprehensive over any of our foes from across the ditch, but our expectations as a team - and of each other - are different this season. This Sunday’s game against the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic is going to be an absolute doozy! After a rocky start, the Magic now have five games on the trot to their credit and will be determined to put a halt to our unbeaten run. They’re a gutsy opponent and we will have to bring our A game to keep the streak alive. Tickets are selling fast so make sure you’re courtside to witness this one live at ILT Stadium Southland. Your energy fuels ours and it’s time to pack out OUR HOUSE!
Cheers, Wendy Frew
